Background: Organized together with local NPOs, ‘Association to protect nature in Tondabayashi’. Even though 70% of Japan’s land is forested, the forests are not properly maintained, as there is a lack of investment in the health and ecology of these ecosystems since imported wood is much cheaper. Over 90% of our forests are not virgin forests and cannot be left as “nature”, so it is important to provide continuing care for our forests. We will try to revive our forests and create a balanced ecology.

Work: We will mainly cut and clear trees to make trails, cut grasses, bamboos and make steps for a footpath in the forest.

Accommodation: Simple renovated house and a log house constructed by local people. Cooking with firewood by turns. Sleeping bag is necessary! We usually enjoy a party in the night!

Location: 60 km south of Osaka, but in a natural setting.

Terminal: Osaka (1.5 hour by train. You need to arrive at Kansai airport by 7 am on the first day and can leave there after 5 pm on the second day). We may be able to find your place for home stay around Osaka in Friday and/ or Sunday nights upon your request!

Special Remark: We welcome volunteers who have interest in nature protection and promotion/ exchange with people as well as adaptability to enjoy a simple lifestyle!

 Participation Fee: You need to pay 5,000yen JPY (about 40US$) on your arrival. This includes meals from the dinner on the first day to breakfast on the third day and accommodation in the first night as well as coordination and administration. The other cost needs to be paid by the volunteers themselves.

NICE-15-VS22  Awara  (Fukui)  07/18-07/20  ENVI  10 vols. (3 int.)

  

Background: Organized together with local organization, “Fukui Hito Machi Kaihatsu Keikaku”, founded to making the community space for connecting local people and to renovating the local community.　 Honjo area in Awara city, there is the forest and shrine which have the 1000-year history. Local people maintain them for conserving the original biodiversity. They also try to pass down the importance of that forest to next-generation through forest activities with kids. In this area, there is culture of "Shishimai", lion dance, the traditional dance performed by one or more dancers wearing a guardian lion costume, but this culture will come to an end due to a lack of successors. So local group try to keep it with young people.

Work: We will 1) help to maintaining the forest or arable lands 2) reviving the activity of “Shishimai” culture.

Accommodation: Renovated house (traditional house!). Cooking by volunters by turns. Sleeping bag is necessary!

Location: About 200 km north east of Osaka. Awara city is an agricultural city and famous for hot spring.

Terminal: From Komatsu, 1 hour by local train. From Osaka, 3 hours by express train. You need to arrive at Kansai airport by 6am on the first day and can leave campsite after 1pm on the last day. From Tokyo, 5 hours by bullet train or 11 hours by midnight bus. If you want to stay before/after Workcamp in Fukui, please ask us.
